〜ばかりだ
Meaning
Expresses a change continuing in a bad direction. As in 「悪くなるばかりだ」, used to lament an undesirable one-way change. In the form 「あとは〜ばかりだ」, it also means that preparations are complete and all that remains is to wait for it.
Examples
- 最近、物価は上がるばかりだ Lately, prices do nothing but rise.
- 祖母の病状は悪化するばかりで、心配だ My grandmother's condition only worsens, and I'm worried.
- 準備は整った。あとは出発を待つばかりだ Preparations are complete. Now all that's left is to await departure.
